Title: How to get an Academic Job in Geography

Abstract: The job market this year is difficult! The recommendation we’ve been giving to our students is to expand their horizons (in terms of topics, disciplines, places, types of jobs, etc.) and still apply to the academic jobs available. This workshop is designed to guide graduate students and postdoctoral researchers through every stage of the academic job search process. Participants will learn how to develop a strong application package, including crafting an effective cover letter, research statement, teaching philosophy, and diversity statement tailored to different types of institutions. It will give the students the opportunity to practice how to find academic jobs and to highlight research achievements, teaching philosophy, and institutional fit with clarity and confidence. The session will also cover strategies for preparing and excelling in academic interviews—both virtual and on-campus—focusing on presentation skills, job talk structure, and effective communication with faculty, students, and search committees. This workshop will guide participants through the key components of a successful academic job search to support a successful transition into a new academic career.
